Julian Wooten Biography

JWootenJulian grew up in rural Pender County, as one of nine children, near Maple Hill, NC. After college he was employed by the Department of the Navy, United States Marine Corps, Camp Lejeune, NC as an ecologist. At the time of his retirement, he was the Assistant Chief of Staff, Environmental Management.

Julian has been interested in honey bees for as long  as he can remember (probably the result of his dad keeping a few colonies for honey for their large family). He bought his first hives when he was fifteen and has not been without bees since that time. Currently, Julian and his brother own and manage about four hundred colonies in Onslow, Pender and Duplin counties, primarily for their own strawberry and blueberry pollination needs.

A beekeeper never knows where the bees will lead them and for Julian one of his and Marie’s favorite experiences was the opportunity Julian had to be the beekeeper for the movie “The Secret Life of Bees” in 2008.  In addition to being the bee wrangler, he also trained Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning and Tristan Wilds to handle bees for the movie.  You can read more about his experience here.

Julian is a Past President of Onslow County Beekeepers and has served the NCSBA  as Coastal Regional Director, 1st Vice-President, and now President.
