Highlights of the 2000 Summer Meeting

Speakers and Topics Included:

• Dr. Patty Elzen from the USDA Bee Lab in Weslaco talked about the development of resistance by varroa mites to pesticides
• Dr. Wood returned to talk about insect stings and allergic reactions and he also conducted a certification program for those who wished to be certified in the use of epinephrine
• Our own NCSBA President, Don Moore told us how our Association organized a hive replacement program to help NC beekeepers who lost bees due to Hurricane Floyd
• Learned from Karen Bryan of the NCDA and Keith Weatherly of the Farm Service Administration about the programs to help beekeepers after natural disasters strike and how data is collected to be used in calculating reimbursement payments.
• Dr. John Ambrose discussed NCSU studies on nonchemical control of varroa mites and NCSU’s recommendations for the control of mites and the small hive beetle.
• Success stories from some of the NCSBA bee chapters.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES AT THE 2000 SUMMER CONVENTION

1. Honey Competition: This is the 24^th year for this very popular contest, and categories included extracted honey, comb honey, cut comb honey, and creamed honey. All honey must have been made in the past 12 months, and three containers of each entry are required. Judging is identical to that used at the N.C. State Fair. A grand prize of $25 and ribbons for each category will be awarded.
2. Cooking with Honey Contest: Entries for this contest are solicited, and categories include any cooked or uncooked food (including beverages) made with honey. Recipes must be submitted with all entries. A grand prize of $25 will be awarded, and ribbons will be awarded for each category.
3. Gadget Show/Contest: This contest is open for any homemade gadgets, devices, or inventions relating to beekeeping. Entries should be the design and property of the entrant and will be judged on creativity, workmanship, and practicality. A description of each gadget and its use must be included with the entry. The grand prize is a $25 gift certificate (Forrest Gadget Award) from Brushy Mountain Bee Supply. Ribbons will also be awarded.
4. NCSBA Audio Visual Beekeeping Contest: Entries may include slide sets and scripts or audio tapes or videotapes on bees and beekeeping. The grand prize is a $50 savings bond from Sheppard’s Bee Farm. Ribbons will also be awarded. All entries should be mailed no later than July 8, 2000 to John T. Ambrose, NCSU, Box 7626, Raleigh, NC 27695-7626.

Notes:
(1) Entries for all contests (except audiovisual) must be received at the NCSBA convention by 9:00am on July 21, 2000.
(2) Any individual or family registrant at the Summer 2000 NCSBA Conference is eligible to enter any of the above contests. Entries will not be accepted from anyone who is not registered for the convention.

NCSBA AUCTION (Silent Auction) This auction is a fund raiser for the NCSBA’s Apiculture Science Fund which is used to support bee research at N.C. State University. Current research projects include: nonchemical control of Varroa mites, and the affect of small hive beetles on bees and control of the pest.

You can support this fund in one of two ways. Either purchase some of the items for sale or donate an appropriate item for the auction. Donated auction items can be either bee related items or items of general interest to beekeepers and their spouses at the Summer convention. If you itemize your taxes then you can take a tax deduction. You can obtain a receipt for that amount after the auction. The auction will be a silent auction - no auctioneer. Items will be placed on tables with cards for "written" bids. You can bid anytime from the start of the meeting until the break on Saturday morning.
